As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

America’s favorite square-jawed detective is on the case in this silver screen adaptation of the classic comic strip. Warren Beatty plays the title hero, loved by the citizens of his city, loathed by the underworld. And what a group they are; a gaggle of hideously malformed thugs led by a totally over the top Al Pacino as Big Boy Caprice. Big Boy plans to amalgamate the top crime bosses of the city (appointing himself as leader, of course), eventually killing Dick Tracy and ruling the town with an iron fist. The outline is fairly standard but the production design is terrific, using glorious colors, beautiful backdrops and realistic miniatures to its advantage. Worth a look if only for the eye candy. Oscar-winner for Best Art Direction, Best Make-up, Best Original Song (Sooner or Later [I Always Get My Man]).
OUR RATING— ** ½

ORIGINAL— Dick Tracy (1945)
