Brilliantly animated tropical-themed fable for the family. On a Polynesian island live a tribe of people living a contented existence. Never straying further then the reef surrounding their island, they live in security, certain of wise leadership from their chief. The chief's daughter Moana, though, has always yearned to travel, never quite satisfied with her lot in life. When the island's resources begin to dwindle she takes it upon herself to save her home and family. Against her father's wishes she sets sail, beginning a journey of self discovery. Using her knowledge of island folklore Moana seeks out the shape-shifting demigod Maui, determined to recruit him for what lies ahead. They must travel the vast seas, recover Maui's fish hook/weapon thingy and find Te Fiti, an island that can restore life and plenty to the other islands. But it won't be easy; there's a terrible lava monster guarding the island, one which Maui battled and was defeated by centuries ago. Moana and Maui (not to mention Heihei, a mentally challenged chicken), though somewhat reluctant companions, soon come to rely on, even trust, each other. Engaging characters and beautiful visuals are the main attractions here. The vocal performances are spirited and energetic, the visuals bringing the characters and their surroundings to vivid life. What's disappointing is its rather bland yet textbook Disney girl-defies-her-parents-and-becomes-hero approach to the material, plus mostly forgettable musical numbers. Entertaining sure, especially for the younger ones, though more discerning viewers can see past the glamour and perceive the been-there-done-that feel. You're welcome.
