An old-fashioned tale of innocence and sentimentality are locked behind the doors to the secret garden. A young orphan is shipped off to live with her reclusive uncle in his Gothic ancestral home. Upon arrival she finds that her stay is an unwelcome one; from the master to the servants resentment seems to permeate the household. As she wanders the lonely grounds she discovers a part of the garden that is sealed off. With the help of a local boy she restores this mass of forgotten weeds into a beautiful garden, a secret they share only with her disabled cousin, who sees the garden as a refuge. Vivid Technicolor enhances the beautiful gardens, in contrast with the creepy estate. A classic story for children and parents alike.
OUR RATING— ** ½
REMADE AS— The Secret Garden (1993)
