A terrific ensemble cast drives this action packed film set during the harsh days of WWII. An Army officer (one who has a problem with authority) has been given a classified assignment. But first he must take a dozen misfit prison inmates and turn them into battle-ready soldiers. They must first survive their training, a harsh regimen of exercises and harsh conditions that would break the ordinary man. Then comes their mission, to drop behind enemy lines and take out a heavily fortified stronghold. Besides the cast the film offers bold action and heroics, not to mention generous doses of humor. With plenty of heroes to root for this one comes out a winner. Later developed into a television series. Oscar-winner for Best Sound Effects.
