Good evening. It seems that Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) can do no wrong in the eyes of Paramount studio executives… that is until Hitch reads a fascinating novel full of taboo stuff that he believes has box office potential. The novel: Psycho, by Robert Bloch. The new project soon takes its toll on all involved, whether financially or emotionally, even putting a wedge between Hitch and his wife, Vera (Helen Mirren). But the show must go on and despite the setbacks Alfred Hitchcock came to deliver an instant classic that is arguably his greatest artistic achievement. This film is at its best when dealing with the making of Psycho (1960); the remainder of the film is dedicated to Hitchcock’s playful relationship with his wife/business partner. A fun biopic chronicling a high point in the career of an artistic genius. Though entertaining the film is curiously somewhat empty, providing no insight into the master of suspense or the film that would become a timeless masterwork. Still a must-see for any classic movie buff.
