     Dial M for Murder
1954  NR  DRAMA  1h 45min
CAST— Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings, John Williams
MUSIC— Dimitri Tiomkin  DIRECTOR— Alfred Hitchcock  BASED ON— Dial M for Murder (play) by Frederick Knott

A thoroughly enjoyable exercise in planning the perfect murder. Ray Milland plays an ex-tennis star living off his wife Grace Kelly’s money. When he discovers that she’s been having an affair with Robert Cummings he decides to do away with her. After a year of planning he schemes an infallible crime: blackmail an old college chap into bumping her off for him. But things go horribly awry when the guy gets killed while committing this perfect murder. Milland then sets Kelly up for blackmail and premeditated murder in a tale that has more twists than… something that has a lot of twists in it. Get ready to cringe; there’s one brutal, graphic and disturbing death scene comin’ up. A bit stagy at times but all in all the film is oh so Hitchcock.
OUR RATING— ***
REMADE AS— A Perfect Murder (1998)
