The way ahead is dark indeed for an escaped con hitching his way to the city by the bay. Inexplicably a young artist (Lauren Bacall) with a heart of gold, fully knowing who and what he is, offers her assistance. Concealing his identity by all means she clothes him, feeds him, offers him shelter and cash, all for reasons of her own. Soon the con scores some info on how to alter his appearance, just enough so that the authorities would be at a loss as to how to find him. He receives plastic surgery, the bandages are removed and voila! Ladies and gentlemen: enter Humphrey Bogart! Now the new Bogey begins to unravel the events that sent him up the river in the first place. Can Bogart solve the murder of his wife before the police catch on to his newest gimmick? A superb melodrama with enough suspense to keep the viewer glued to the screen. Final note: For about the first quarter of the film the audience sees through the convict’s eyes, an interesting first-person viewpoint.
