As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     The Devil at 4 O’Clock
1961  NR  DRAMA  2h 6min
CAST— Spencer Tracy, Frank Sinatra, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Kerwin Mathews, Barbara Luna
MUSIC— George Duning  DIRECTOR— Mervyn LeRoy  BASED ON— The Devil at Four O’Clock (novel), by Max Catto

OK dramatic adventure featuring dynamic performances by both Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra. Tracy plays a fallen priest whose last day on a small speck of a tropical island becomes too hot to handle. A volcano erupts, forcing the island’s population to evacuate. But Tracy fears for the safety of the children in the leper colony, cut off from the safety of civilization. He asks for volunteers to fly with him into the mountains to help the children to safety; no one will dare go with him except for three chained prisoners (with Sinatra as their ringleader). From there it’s a tense battle through the dense forest as the lava flow steadily begins to cut off their escape route… Fine special effects are a highlight in this somewhat forgotten feature. Tends to lose its focus; sometimes it’s a film about an arduous trek through the mountains, at others it’s a film about lost faith. All in all, you could do worse.
OUR RATING— ** ½
