As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Day of the Outlaw
1959  NR  WESTERN  1h 32min
CAST— Robert Ryan, Burl Ives, Tina Louise, Alan Marshal, Nehemiah Persoff, Venetia Stevenson, David Nelson, Jack Lambert, Elisha Cook
MUSIC— Alexander Courage  DIRECTOR— Andre de Toth

Robert Ryan stars in this frigid Western that emphasizes claustrophobic drama and suspense as opposed to action and gun slinging. In a ramshackle town populated by a scant handful of citizens a desperate band of Army deserters (laden down with thousands in stolen gold) ride in and take over. For the most part the group wants to run wild with what whiskey and women they can find, but leader Burl Ives wants them cold sober; there’s a blizzard out and the posse isn’t far behind. But tension builds as the outlaws begin to rebel against Ives and his methods. Never quite as entertaining as the bolder tales of the West but not a bad way to kill ninety two minutes.
OUR RATING— ** ½
