     It’s a Wonderful World
1939  NR  COMEDY  1h 26min
CAST— Claudette Colbert, James Stewart, Guy Kibbee, Nat Pendleton, Frances Drake, Edgar Kennedy, Ernest Truex, Sidney Blackmer, Hans Conried
MUSIC— Edward Ward  DIRECTOR— W. S. Van Dyke II

“Wonderful” may be stretching the truth a little; “adequate” may be apt. James Stewart plays a private detective assigned to keep an eye on a wealthy newlywed. When said newlywed is framed for murder by his wife and her lover Stewart’s trouble has just begun. After being arrested for aiding said newlywed Stewart escapes from police custody to continue his pursuit of the real killer. Along the way he meets up with screwy poet Claudette Colbert, who bothers him incessantly, never taking a hint (or anything spelled out in plain English). Stewart has fun playing the gruff private dick always two steps behind Colbert’s looniness. Falls short of classic status but still entertaining.
OUR RATING— ** ½
