As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Jason and the Argonauts
1963  NR  FANTASY  1h 41min
CAST— Todd Armstrong, Gary Raymond, Nancy Kovack, Honor Blackman, Nigel Green
MUSIC— Bernard Herrmann  DIRECTOR— Don Chaffey

Slow moving, poorly acted blend of Greek mythology and less than believable cinematic heroics are the order of the day in this fantasy/adventure. Jason, last in the line of an ancient kingdom, discovers that he must travel to the edge of the world to obtain a golden fleece, a prize that will reunite and strengthen his people. Or something. But the voyage is fraught with danger, so he gathers together a gaggle of guys to be his warriors, and they set sail for adventure. Truthfully, you can doze through most of the film and not miss anything. The only thing that livens things up are Ray Harryhausen’s amazing special effects, stop-motion animation that looks as good as ever (the bone-rattling finale is exceptionally fine work). Forget about the rest. We have.
OUR RATING— * ½
REMADE AS— Jason and the Argonauts (2000)
