As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

CAST— Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarin Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Willem Dafoe
MUSIC— Michael Giacchino  DIRECTOR— Andrew Stanton  BASED ON— A Princess of Mars (novel), by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Here we have a big dumb attempt at a sci-fi epic, complete with warring alien factions, an intergalactic romance and lots of confusion. John Carter is a former Confederate captain who looks out only for himself. When he is inexplicably transported to Mars he learns that the world (or galaxy, that is) is bigger than him. There are two Martian armies fighting for supremacy and if the bad guys have their way the planet will suffer. Carter soon meets a tough Martian princess with brain and brawn to match. They soon join forces in order to combat the bad guys and… we’ve seen it all before. The potential for a great adventure is wasted here; instead the film is an over-long bore that clearly cost an arm and a leg to produce… all for naught. You could do worse, but then again you could do better.
OUR RATING— **
