As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Jitterbugs
1943  NR  COMEDY  1h 14min
CAST— Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Vivian Blaine, Douglas Fowley, Noel Madison, Lee Patrick, Robert Emmett Keane
MUSIC— Lew Pollack, Leigh Harline  DIRECTOR— Mal St. Clair

Laughs abound in this feature from Laurel and Hardy. Here the boys are a travelling two-man band who come across a travelling salesman selling instant gasoline pills. Of course this guy is a con artist, but this fact eludes L&H, so they all team up to sell gas pills at a county fair. There the conman meets a pretty girl whose mother was fleeced out of $10,000. Who better to retrieve the cash but another conman? These four decide to enact their own con game, involving false identities, switcheroos and Stan in drag (always worth the price of admission). Several generic song and dance numbers predictably dampen the comedy, but rest assured, there’s plenty of funny to be had, all courtesy of the several fine messes Stan gets Ollie into.
OUR RATING— ***
