As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Jamaica Inn
1939  NR  ADVENTURE  1h 48min
CAST— Charles Laughton, Maureen O’Hara, Leslie Banks, Robert Newton, Emlyn Williams, Mervyn
Johns
MUSIC— Eric Fenby  DIRECTOR— Alfred Hitchcock  BASED ON— Jamaica Inn (novel), by Daphne Du Maurier

Hitchcock brings us a dull little adventure tale that features Charles Laughton in a humorous performance as a pompous gang leader and Maureen O’Hara in her film debut. She plays a young Irish woman who arrives in England to live with her aunt and uncle, the proprietors of the Jamaica Inn. The only problem is that he’s a blood-thirsty pirate who works under the snotty justice of the peace. Memorable, if only for Laughton’s flamboyant performance, but less than remarkable Hitchcockian fare.
OUR RATING— * ½
