Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart star in
this acclaimed melodrama focusing on a unique hostage situation at a rural pit
stop in Arizona’s Petrified Forest. When Duke Mantee, notorious killer, needs a
place for he and his gang to lay low in the harsh Arizona desert they opt for
an out of the way Bar-B-Q joint with more than a few surprises in store. A
lovelorn waitress, a cackling oldster, and an aging jock may seem like enough
to handle but when a philosophical hitcher and snooty sophisticates decide to
join the party, the villains pretty much have their hands full. A night of
intimate conversation and startling revelations await them all on this odd
little adventure far removed from the norm. Not so much a hostage thriller as
it is a film of philosophical insight and romantic rambling. Humphrey Bogart
hands in a fine performance as the demented killer, but the rest is strictly
for melodrama freaks.
