     The Petrified Forest
1936  NR  DRAMA  1h 22min
CAST— Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Dick Foran, Humphrey Bogart, Genevieve Tobin, Charley Grapewin, Porter Hall
MUSIC— Bernhard Kaun  DIRECTOR— Archie Mayo  BASED ON— The Petrified Forest (play), by Robert Sherwood

Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart star in this acclaimed melodrama focusing on a unique hostage situation at a rural pit stop in Arizona’s Petrified Forest. When Duke Mantee, notorious killer, needs a place for he and his gang to lay low in the harsh Arizona desert they opt for an out of the way Bar-B-Q joint with more than a few surprises in store. A lovelorn waitress, a cackling oldster, and an aging jock may seem like enough to handle but when a philosophical hitcher and snooty sophisticates decide to join the party, the villains pretty much have their hands full. A night of intimate conversation and startling revelations await them all on this odd little adventure far removed from the norm. Not so much a hostage thriller as it is a film of philosophical insight and romantic rambling. Humphrey Bogart hands in a fine performance as the demented killer, but the rest is strictly for melodrama freaks.
