Engaging Western yarn featuring Gary Cooper in yet another understated performance. Cooper plays a reformed outlaw commissioned by his home town to hire a school teacher. Before he knows it he’s sucked into a Wild West adventure. His train is robbed, his money is stolen and he’s left behind with two other passengers. Off they trek to an abandoned homestead that used to be a hideout for his gang. It turns out that the house isn’t so abandoned after all; a notorious outlaw (his own uncle, played by a boisterous Lee J. Cobb) has a new gang of robbers (the same guys that robbed Cooper’s train) and is hiding out at their old spot. Soon there comes a desperate struggle for survival as Cooper claims that he’s still the killer he used to be. Uncle soon hatches a plan to relieve a town of its monetary assets. Cooper must take advantage of the situation if he is to make it through this alive. A fine cast, a superior premise and an exciting finale offer a reminder as to how a Western should be delivered.
