     Mommie Dearest
1981  PG  DRAMA  2h 9min
CAST— Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid, Steve Forrest, Howard da Silva, Mara Hobel, Rutanya Alda, Harry Goz
MUSIC— Henry Mancini  DIRECTOR— Frank Perry  BASED ON— Mommie Dearest (book), by Christina Crawford

The original drama queen, Joan Crawford, was worshiped by adoring fans during her highly-acclaimed, Oscar-winning career. But what was the story behind the scenes, when the cameras were off and the makeup scrubbed away? Daughter Christina Crawford tells a tale of a vastly different Crawford than that seen on the silver screen. A tale of madness unfolds; a tale of obsession, alcohol, and wire hangers. Joan centers the majority of her anger and frustration on her daughter, causing psychological scars lasting throughout her life. The film shows glimpses into their private lives and Joan’s professional life, giving a balanced viewpoint of the accounts portrayed. Yeah, right. Let’s face it, she was nuts! At the 1982 Golden Raspberry Awards Mommie Dearest won Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Faye Dunaway), Worst Supporting Actor (Steve Forrest), Worst Supporting Actress (Diana Scarwid), Worst Screenplay. In 1989 the film won the Razzie for Worst Picture of the Decade.
OUR RATING— ** ½
