“When the moon hits your eye…” Picture this: a widow engaged to one man falls in love with his brother, a bitter baker with a hidden romanticism. She knows it can never be; she fights her feelings, yet can’t deny them while the baker blatantly declares his love for her. Meanwhile, all about her, family and friends are having romantic connections of their own. That’s what is so subtle about this film: on the surface you see a love story that you can root for, yet below the surface there are sparks flying everywhere. A charming, character-driven romantic comedy fleshed out by wonderful performances and a flawless script. If only more romcoms could tear a page from this particular book. Oscar-winner for Best Actress (Cher), Best Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis), Best Original Screenplay.
OUR RATING— ***
