As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

MUSIC— Leigh Harline  DIRECTOR— George Stevens  BASED ON— Two's a Crowd (story), by Garson Kanin

Director George Stevens takes a jab at the wartime housing crisis in this classic farce. Jean Arthur plays an orderly young woman who plans to sublet her apartment during this time of need. Who should answer her newspaper ad but an effervescent Charles Coburn, in town by invitation of a senator to discuss welfare and housing reform? While Arthur finds Coburn to be eccentric she sees little harm in letting him stay on; until, that is, Coburn decides to rent his half of the apartment to another stranger, a young government mystery man, played by Joel McCrea. And romantic complications ensue between Arthur and McCrea. The real charm to be found in the picture is in Coburn’s performance. He lights up the screen with his airy demeanor and playful dialogue; the romantic stuff is secondary. Full speed ahead! Oscar-winner for Best Supporting Actor (Coburn).
OUR RATING— ** ½
