Longfellow Deeds, small-town tuba player/poet, has just fallen into twenty million dollars. His uncle has left his entire estate to Longfellow, but he’s at a loss as to what to do with it. So off he goes to New York to claim the estate; meanwhile the town is abuzz with shady lawyers and distant relatives trying to get their hands on the booty, and reporters all over the city want an exclusive on this small town boy striking it rich. One such reporter, a certain “Babe” Bennett, gets to the heart of the story by getting to the heart of the man himself. But she never intended on falling in love with him. This film deals with an array of subjects including romance, heartbreak, and the Great Depression, while still keeping the tone heartwarming and funny. This is definitely one for film buffs of all shapes and sizes. Oscar-winner for Best Director. Later developed into a television series. Warning: Beware of the remake! AKA A Gentleman Goes to Town, Opera Hat.
