     Of Mice and Men
1939  NR  DRAMA  1h 47min
CAST— Lon Chaney, Jr., Burgess Meredith, Betty Field, Charles Bickford, Bob Steele, Noah Beery, Jr.
MUSIC— Aaron Copland  DIRECTOR— Lewis Milestone  BASED ON— Of Mice and Men (story), by John Steinbeck

Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr. star in this fine dramatic tale of two Depression-era drifters finding themselves working on a ranch. Chaney, mentally challenged to some degree, is watched closely by Meredith both on the road and off, for trouble seems to follow him. Enthusiastic in nature and as powerful as a bear Chaney is an imposing character, yet the wispy Meredith knows how to handle him. Life on the ranch has its advantages: a roof overhead, three squares a day and the company of others. Yet trouble can always be found, even when no one is looking for it. A simplistic storyline is held together by outstanding performances by the lead performers. Classic movie buffs take notice. Final note: After watching this film you might wanna check out the excellent 1992 version, directed by Gary Sinise, and starring Sinise and John Malkovich.
OUR RATING— ***
REMADE AS— Of Mice and Men (1992)
