     The Old Dark House
1932  NR  DRAMA  1h 11min
CAST— Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Gloria Stuart, Lilian Bond, Ernest Thesiger, Raymond Massey, Eva Moore
MUSIC— Bernhard Kaun  DIRECTOR— James Whale  BASED ON— Benighted (novel), by J. B. Priestley

Six stranded travelers find their way to a mysterious mansion on the night of a drenching storm. The mansion, they soon find out, holds many secrets which should remain behind locked doors. Tended by an odd brother and his sister, along with their menacing butler, the house seems dangerous enough. But when the travelers start to explore the house, they decide that maybe they should have taken their chances with the storm. Labeled as a horror film, it tends to produce more yawns than chills, although Karloff does his best playing the hulking mute butler. If you want a good chiller, you might wanna look for another Karloff feature. This is for Karloff freaks only.
OUR RATING— * ½
REMADE AS— The Old Dark House (1963)
