As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Possessed
1947  NR  DRAMA  1h 48min
CAST— Joan Crawford, Van Heflin, Raymond Massey, Geraldine Brooks, Stanley Ridges
MUSIC— Franz Waxman  DIRECTOR— Curtis Bernhardt

Another Joan Crawford vehicle in which the melodrama comes at knuckle biting speed. Crawford plays a woman driven mad by her desires. From a psycho ward she recounts her dramatic tale to the doctors. She loved a man named David, played by Van Heflin, who rejected her. So she married one whom she didn’t love. When David re-enters her life he falls for her grown step-daughter, furthering the distance between them. To cap it all off, Crawford has fugues and blackouts, even imagining entire scenarios that leave her doubting her very sanity. It’s not easy being Joan. Excellent performances are the highlight of the moody study of a mind on the edge.
OUR RATING— ** ½
