Strong performances enhance this character
study involving a prison psychiatrist (played by Sidney Poitier) and his
troublesome patient, a racist, Nazi sympathizer (played by Bobby Darin) during
World War II. Breaking through the patient’s shell is no easy task, as the
doctor soon finds out, but slowly he begins to realize what drives this man
before him: Hatred. Pure hatred; towards anything and everything. Little does
he understand the depth of the patient’s hatred. The film chronicles the story
of this patient’s life, as seen through multiple flashbacks, but therein lies
the problem; the memories have a dreamy, Rod Serling feel to them, and far too
many flashbacks detract from the overall effect of the film.
