     The Prestige
2006  PG-13  SCIENCE FICTION  2h 10min
CAST— Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, Piper Perabo, David Bowie
MUSIC— David Julyan  DIRECTOR— Christopher Nolan  BASED ON— The Prestige (novel), by Christopher Priest

Abracadabra! A unique blend of drama and fantasy combine in this 19th century period piece. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale star as two up and coming magicians, professional and personal rivals determined to uncover one another’s secrets. Bale is a formidable illusionist, Jackman a natural showman. Through the years they each play a part in one another’s often tragic lives. They both rise to great heights, they both fall to crushing depths. Behind the scenes the rather reluctant (not to mention mysterious) touch of inventor Nicola Tesla can be felt… An intriguing premise is almost undone by frustrating continuity in director Christopher Nolan’s handsome effort. “Electrifying” performances all around, but David Bowie is a standout in a somewhat understated role as Tesla. As different from Batman as Bowie’s right eye is from his left.
OUR RATING— ***
