     Rope
1948  NR  DRAMA  1h 20min
CAST— James Stewart, John Dall, Farley Granger, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Constance Collier, Joan Chandler
MUSIC— David Buttolph, Francis Poulenc  DIRECTOR— Alfred Hitchcock

If you have ever in your life questioned the purpose of health inspectors, look no further than this film. Two college-aged roommates, after killing a close friend (just to see if they could get away with it!), stuff the body in a large chest. Then, after inviting the victim’s parents and other assorted friends over, dinner is served… on the chest. After the murderers drop subtle hints throughout the evening, the guests start to leave, but not before their old college professor starts to piece together that something is very wrong here. James Stewart, as the professor, hands in a fine performance in this Hitchcock film that just never seems to go anywhere. It has a touch of comedy, a touch of the macabre, a bit of suspense, but for the most part everything just turns out flat. Based on a play inspired by an actual murder case.
OUR RATING— ** ½
