As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Rock-A-Bye Baby
1958  NR  COMEDY  1h 43min
CAST— Jerry Lewis, Marilyn Maxwell, Connie Stevens
MUSIC— Walter Scharf, Harry Warren, Sammy Cahn  DIRECTOR— Frank Tashlin

An absolutely delightful excuse for comedy, in one of star Jerry Lewis’ most endearing pictures. Lewis is perpetually pining for his lost love, town beauty queen turned Hollywood starlet Marilyn Maxwell. Maxwell, now up for a major role in the Egyptian epic The White Virgin of the Nile, will soon be up to her ears in controversy; for you see, she’s expecting. After a leave of absence she has the baby, and another, plus one more. She then recruits Lewis to be a caretaker until the White Virgin wraps. Lewis is soon overwhelmed by baby powder and empty milk bottles. His only confidante is his crush’s kid sister, whose love for Lewis runs deep. But what of the two sisters’ brash barber father, straight razor clenched in hand? Will he spell the end of Lewis or will the triplets melt his cold heart? Full of classic Lewis sight gags (milk-filled rubber glove) and oddball situations (a brilliant Lewis as various television personalities) this can truly be hailed as one of his best.
OUR RATING— *** ½
