     Captains Courageous
1937  NR  DRAMA  1h 55min
CAST— Freddie Bartholomew, Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, Charley Grapewin, John Carradine, Mickey Rooney, Walter Kingsford
MUSIC— Franz Waxman, Clifford Vaughan  DIRECTOR— Victor Fleming  BASED ON— Captains Courageous (novel), by Rudyard Kipling

A coming of age tale if ever there was one. A spoiled brat traveling by ocean liner goes overboard and is rescued by a crew of fisherman. There he must learn to live, not according to his own wishes, but by the ways of the sea. He finds a friend and mentor in Manuel, played by Spencer Tracy, who teaches him not only the ways of the fisherman, but also the pathway of strength and wisdom. Not bad for a crusty swab, huh? The film sails smoothly as a fine adventure with spot on characterization, but the heart of the story lies within the relationship between man and boy, their dialogue and interaction being frank and honest. A sea-farin’ classic. Oscar-winner for Best Actor (Tracy).
OUR RATING— ***
REMADE AS— Captains Courageous (1977/1996)
