     The Big Trail
1930  NR  WESTERN  2h 22min
CAST— John Wayne, Marguerite Churchill, El Brendel, Tully Marshall, Tyrone Power, Sr., David Rollins, Ian Keith
MUSIC— Arthur Kay  DIRECTOR— Raoul Walsh

Early John Wayne Western that proves its worth. Simplistic story: scout Wayne, searching for killer fur trappers, has spotted the perps readying for the initial wagon train trek along the Oregon Trail. Wayne signs up as a scout, falls in love with fair lass and bides his time, waiting for the opportunity to accuse the murderers. All the while the viewer meets other weary travelers as the film flits from here to there. Though loosely structured, this Western can’t be faulted for realism in its design nor in its epic proportions. A pleasant surprise. Deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry.
OUR RATING— ** ½
