As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     The Big Store
1941  NR  COMEDY  1h 23min
CAST— Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Tony Martin, Virginia Grey, Margaret Dumont, Douglass Dumbrille, Henry Armetta
MUSIC— Hal Borne, Georgie Stoll  DIRECTOR— Charles Riesner

The usual amount of shenanigans from the Marx Brothers, with less than the usual amount of funny. A local crooner inherits half of a large department store. Unscrupulous manager plans to do away with him and sell the store himself. Singer’s aunt hires detective Groucho as bodyguard for her nephew; Groucho in turn uses the assistance of Chico and Harpo to uncover a murder plot within the top brass of the store. Needlessly plot heavy; unimaginative musical numbers dampen the pace. Ultimately forgettable.
OUR RATING— **
