As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Cowboy
1958  NR  WESTERN  1h 32min
CAST— Glenn Ford, Jack Lemmon, Anna Kashfi, Brian Donlevy, Dick York
MUSIC— George Duning  DIRECTOR— Delmer Daves  BASED ON— My Reminiscences as a Cowboy (novel), by Frank Harris

Jack Lemmon plays it straight in this dramatic Western featuring Glenn Ford as a rough cattle driver who expects 100% out of his men. He reluctantly takes on hotel bellboy Lemmon as partner and off they go. Lemmon soon learns that being a cowboy isn’t all horseback riding and campfire songs; this is a mean business and Ford drives him like no other. Lemmon soon becomes as gruff as Ford; what’s more, he becomes cold, callous, just plain ornery. Ford sees that he’s created a monster and discovers that Lemmon has changed him in the process. Never quite as good as you want it to be, despite great performances by the leads. Still, you could do worse.
OUR RATING— ** ½
