     The Cowboys
1972  PG  WESTERN  2h 11min
CAST— John Wayne, Roscoe Lee Brown, Bruce Dern, Colleen Dewhurst, Slim Pickens
MUSIC— John Williams  DIRECTOR— Mark Rydell

Always exciting Western saga featuring the Duke himself. When all the able-bodied young men run off to stake a gold claim rancher John Wayne has no one to work his range. He has over a thousand head of cattle to get to market and his only option for hired hands is the schoolyard. He hires young boys (ages 11 to 15) to join his cattle drive, and they range from the introverted book worm to the semi-experienced cow hand. The boys mix trouble and fun into their days of hard work. But soon danger comes into play when they are confronted by murderous rustlers. The boys soon grow up on this journey into adventure as Wayne teaches them the ins and outs of the business of beef. An entertaining and endearing epic that showcases a Wayne that can be tender yet tough-as-nails. A winner. Later developed into a television series.
