     The Incredible Burt Wonderstone
2013  PG-13  COMEDY  1h 40min
CAST— Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Jim Carrey
MUSIC— Lyle Workman  DIRECTOR— Don Scardino

“Incredible” may be stretching it. This is a dreary, stupid attempt at a comedy full of showmanship, glitz and glamour. If only it were fun. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi star as magician superstars Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton, respectively. Inseparable onstage, seething with resentment off. Their sold out show is soon old news when new sensation street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey) brings his shock magic reality TV show Brain Rapist to the masses. Wonderstone and Marvelton’s partnership eventually splits, leaving Wonderstone to seek other means of mystical employment… to little effect. Things start to look up when he meets a mentor in a defunct, stroke-prone Hollywood illusionist, the very guy who inspired Wonderstone’s own illustrious career. If Wonderstone can relearn the trade, maybe he can defeat the brain rapist, win the girl and feel the magic all over again. The only fun to be had here is in the illusions themselves, designed by David Copperfield and co. (Hangman is a stunner). Skip the rest.
OUR RATING— * ½
