As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

Film As Dracula

     Horror of Dracula

1958  NR  HORROR  1h 22min
CAST— Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Melissa Stribling, Michael Gough, Carol Marsh, John Van Eyssen, Valerie Gount, Miles Malleson
MUSIC— James Bernard  DIRECTOR— Terence Fisher  BASED ON— Dracula (novel), by Bram Stoker

Hammer Films unleashes the Count in bloody Technicolor, starring not a suave Romanian gentleman but a hissing Englishman. Christopher Lee “chews the scenery” as Dracula, his nemesis Dr. Van Helsing being played by the unflappable Peter Cushing. Basic formula from start to finish has Drac doing his thing while Van Helsing, aided by a young Michael Gough, spend their time searching tombs and staking the undead. Grand finale utilizes (now dated) special effects to full measure. AKA Dracula.
OUR RATING— ** ½
FOLLOWED BY— The Brides of Dracula (1960), Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966), Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968), Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970), Scars of Dracula (1970), Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972), The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1974)
