As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Hot Shots!
1991  PG-13  COMEDY  1h 24min
CAST— Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes, Valeria Golino, Jon Cryer, Kevin Dunn, Bill Irwin, Lloyd Bridges
MUSIC— Sylvester Levay  DIRECTOR— Jim Abrahams

Nonstop hilarity from beginning to end, Hot Shots!, the obvious spoof of Top Gun (1986), is another film from director Jim Abrahams, one of the minds behind the Airplane! (1980) and Naked Gun movies. Charlie Sheen plays Topper Harley, a rebellious fighter pilot asked to rejoin The Navy to be a part of a top-secret mission, code-named “Sleepy Weasel”. The real standouts are Sheen and Lloyd Bridges (who is familiar with the format by now) as a bumbling admiral. But the real reason to watch this one is to become familiar with a horrible disorder known as Walleye Vision, and the delicate corneal procedure to reverse it, multioptipupiloptomy. This is probably the first film to address such a disorder, and we owe them our thanks.
OUR RATING— ***
FOLLOWED BY— Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993)
