     The Desperate Hours
1955  NR  DRAMA  1h 52min
CAST— Humphrey Bogart, Fredric March, Arthur Kennedy, Martha Scott, Dewey Martin, Gig Young, Mary Murphy, Robert Middleton
MUSIC— Gail Kubik  DIRECTOR— William Wyler  BASED ON— The Desperate Hours  (novel), by Joseph Hayes

A tense, taut thriller builds tension as a group of three escaped convicts invade the home of a Leave it to Beaver-esqe family. Humphrey Bogart plays the leader of this trio, a mean-spirited tough guy with a gun complex. His brother is more of a sensitive type, a little more caring than the rest. The final member is just a nut, a big oaf five cans short of a six-pack, and therein lies the problematic wildcard. The family must stick together to stay alive, but, as is often the case, complications ensue. Suspense films from this era are rarely this well made, and rarer still do they keep you on the edge of your seat as this film does. Truly an underrated gem of its time.
OUR RATING— ***
REMADE AS— Desperate Hours (1990)
