Victor Hugo’s classic tale is interpreted onto the screen in this lavish adaptation that many consider to be one of the reigning champs of classic cinema. “The Man of a Thousand Faces” himself, Lon Chaney, plays the title character, the hideously misshapen keeper of the bell tower of the famous cathedral of Notre Dame. As he rings the bells high above the city scape he stands oblivious as the world moves on around him. That is until a beautiful gypsy girl is falsely accused of a crime and sent to hang at the steps of the cathedral. He leaps to her rescue only to face persecution by her former captors and her gypsy kinfolk. Only by the girl’s kindness does he protect her. With striking visuals, massive sets, and stark atmosphere, this silent classic continues to enthrall fans of the genre.
OUR RATING— ** ½
