The tale of the mountain man, as told by Robert Redford. Redford plays the title character, a green young ex-soldier who’s decided to make a go of it in the frigid Rockies. Days become months for Redford as he discovers that the rugged life isn’t all bonfires and weenie roasts. Without the aid and support of various locals (including a grizzled, scene stealing Will Geer) his goose would have been cooked long ago. The story has its ups and downs but falls apart when it becomes a revenge picture. Still, gorgeous scenery and vivid characters make for a memorable film.
OUR RATING— ** ½
