As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     The Mummy
1959  NR  HORROR  1h 28min
CAST— Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Yvonne Furneaux, Eddie Byrne, Felix Aylmer, Raymond Huntley
MUSIC— Franz Reizenstein  DIRECTOR— Terence Fisher

Another mummy (neither a shambling Boris Karloff nor a CGI dust storm) is unleashed upon the screen, with lukewarm results. An archaeologist makes a boo-boo when he opens the tomb of an Egyptian princess; boo-boo # 2 comes when he reads aloud a centuries old writ, unleashing the princess’ ancient lover, played by a stiff-as-a-board Christopher Lee. The mummy’s human master orders Lee to take out those who desecrated the tomb, including the archaeologist’s son, Peter Cushing. Never scary, never exciting, just plain Hammer.
OUR RATING— ** ½
FOLLOWED BY— The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (1964), The Mummy’s Shroud (1967), Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971)
ORIGINAL— The Mummy (1932)
REMADE AS— The Mummy (1999/2017)
