Charles Laughton gives a scene-stealing performance in this classic adventure yarn. He plays the haughty Captain Bligh, captain of His Majesty’s ship, The Bounty. The Bounty is a small ship and is filled to capacity with both experienced seamen and first-timers, the ones likely to screw up the most. This is just fine for Capt. Bligh; it seems as if he’s into punishment, including brutal floggings, chains and irons, and half rations for his men. Well his second in command decides that enough is enough and decides to form an uprising, supported by the oppressed sailors. Thus there was the mutiny on The Bounty. Clark Gable and Franchot Tone give convincing performances as friends on opposite sides of the mutiny, but again, Laughton’s performance is the real reason to watch. Aye, aye. Oscar-winner for Best Picture.
OUR RATING— ***
REMADE AS— Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), The Bounty (1984)
