(novel), by Gaston Leroux
Where’s that mute button? Claude Rains
stars in this empty version of the chilling legend of the Phantom. He plays a
scorned musician, horribly disfigured, wanted for murder. Driven mad by despair
he seeks shelter under the Paris opera house. He begins to haunt the backstage,
manipulating events to his fancy. His main goal is to see a beautiful
understudy rise to stardom. So he kills anyone who stands in her way. But the
head honchos at the theater see their new star as a possible target; to her aid
comes the two men vying for her attention, a fellow opera star and a police
inspector. But neither realize to what extremes the Phantom will reach. What
could have been a decent remake turns out to be another disappointment, unless
you’re an opera fanatic. Containing numerous (seemingly endless) operatic
performances, this may have many wishing that this version was silent, too.
Oscar-winner for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction.
