As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     The Phantom of the Opera
1943  NR  DRAMA  1h 32min
CAST— Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster, Claude Rains, Edgar Barrier, Leo Carrillo, Jane Farrar, J. Edward Bromberg, Fritz Feld, Hume Cronyn
MUSIC— Edward Ward  DIRECTOR— Arthur Lubin  BASED ON— The Phantom of the Opera (novel), by Gaston Leroux

Where’s that mute button? Claude Rains stars in this empty version of the chilling legend of the Phantom. He plays a scorned musician, horribly disfigured, wanted for murder. Driven mad by despair he seeks shelter under the Paris opera house. He begins to haunt the backstage, manipulating events to his fancy. His main goal is to see a beautiful understudy rise to stardom. So he kills anyone who stands in her way. But the head honchos at the theater see their new star as a possible target; to her aid comes the two men vying for her attention, a fellow opera star and a police inspector. But neither realize to what extremes the Phantom will reach. What could have been a decent remake turns out to be another disappointment, unless you’re an opera fanatic. Containing numerous (seemingly endless) operatic performances, this may have many wishing that this version was silent, too. Oscar-winner for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction.
OUR RATING— **
ORIGINAL— The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
REMADE AS— The Phantom of the Opera (1962/1989/1999/2004)
