     Phantom
1922  NR  DRAMA  1h 57min
CAST— Alfred Abel, Frieda Richard
MUSIC— Silent  DIRECTOR— F. W. Murnau  BASED ON— Phantom (novel), by Gerhart Hauptmann

Take a long-winded excursion into boredom with this obscure German silent from acclaimed director F. W. Murnau. A journal recounts the drama of a young poet living a life of poverty who meets a good-for-nothing living the good life mooching off of his aunt. This scoundrel coerces him into swindling his aunt out of a small fortune by claiming to have sold numerous poems at a handsome price. The young man then proceeds to follow in his partner’s footsteps, living a life of sin and depravity. His conscience takes on the form of his unrequited love, a beautiful young woman driving a team of raging horses. Unlike Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922), Murnau’s vision here is simple and straightforward. The film is directed with a fine eye for detail and edited smoothly. Fans of silent film can relish the melodrama, but those with other tastes may feel otherwise.
