Well-paced sea-faring suspense yarn showcasing the talents of many a ‘70s star. The grand cruise liner Poseidon, on a voyage from the US to Greece, runs afoul of a tidal wave, capsizing her. A handful of survivors, led by the bickering duo of Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine, decide to head to the bottom of the ship (from where they’re standing it’s the top) and wait for rescue. Off they go to the inner bowels of the ship, continually heading up in their quest for the surface. But they had better watch out: the water level is rising and the number of survivors is falling. Produced by Irwin Allen, this tense adventure keeps the viewer interested by coming up with new means of danger and entrapment. Good times. Oscar-winner for Best Song (The Morning After), Best Visual Effects.
