As Seen On Screen

As Seen on Screen offers readers a chance to see film reviews for the everyman, without all of the clutter and nonsense fed to the average filmgoer. Plain, straitforward, to the point. That's our goal. We offer a diverse catalogue of which to choose from, from silent comedies to modern superhero films. Final note: this is a family friendly blog. We only review films rated G through PG-13, plus the unrated films of yesteryear. So if this sounds like your cup of tea, pull up a crumpet and enjoy. Thanks for your support!

     Big Momma’s House
2000  PG-13  COMEDY  1h 38min
CAST— Martin Lawrence, Nia Long, Paul Giamatti, Terrence Howard
MUSIC— Richard Gibbs  DIRECTOR— Raja Gosnell

Do you like southern cookin’? Well come on over to Big Momma’s house! She’ll fix ya up. Martin Lawrence plays FBI agent Malcolm Turner, on the case of stolen cash in California. But to get the cash he and his partner have to stakeout their suspect’s grandmother’s house in Georgia. Their suspect, named Sherry, will be driving through town with her son Trent someday soon. Now here’s the catch: Malcolm (who is a master of disguise, by the way) has to dress up as Miss Hattie Mae Pierce, AKA Big Momma (who is conveniently out of town), and he has to do so convincingly enough not only to fool Sherry, who hasn’t even seen her in years, but also to convince everyone in her tiny little hometown. So Malcolm, who believes Sherry to be innocent of any crimes, must get her to explain if she was in fact involved with the crimes at all, all without blowing his cover, and all the while falling in love with her— inside the Big Momma disguise! Now, after all of this, you may still be wondering: “Why is she called ‘Big Momma’?” Well, wonder no more, little ones. She’s called “Big Momma” because she’s… well… let’s just say…okay, there are only two words to describe it: SHOWER SCENE. Watch the movie at your own risk if you still want to know so badly. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya!
OUR RATING— ** ½
